A Junzi By Any Other Name is…

Over at Manyul Im’s blog there’s a great discussion about how to correctly translate into English the term junzi found in the early Confucian tradition (in Rosemont and Ames, it is translated as exemplary person). It’s an informative conversation, and I think instructive for students who are curious about the kinds of thinking that goes into figuring out how to properly translate key concepts from one language to another (in this case, Chinese to English). Of course, it’s also a good discussion for those of you out there who are more in the know about this particular subject, if you’d like to throw in your own ideas as well.
