Baby Name Voyager

Posted in Life by Chris on August 20, 2008

We’re still thinking about a boy name. We have a short list, but it should be shorter. If name popularity across time is something that interests you, this site is very cool. Click in, you are guaranteed to spend at least a few minutes there.

    Wow–fun stuff!
By the way, my own name, ‘Alexus’, comes on the chart in the 1980s, and all the instances appear to be females. I guess people who’ve never seen me must think I’m a woman in my late teens or 20s…very disturbing.

Even better is this interactive map of popular baby names.

How about “Logan”? You could have one of the most popular names in the U.S. this year *and* have a child named after your favorite (second favorite? third favorite?) Law and Order character (okay, “Bobby” isn’t a good name…but “Vincent” is! I suppose “Lenny” is out. Okay, too much late night rerun TV for me, but you have to veg out somehow after the kids are asleep!)

Alexus – my daughter’s name is far, far more common for a boy, and the name (Parker) is still uncommon as a whole, so she is always mistaken for a boy.

Guy – that site is very cool! Especially when you enter in specific names to see where they are popular.

Manyul – I’m with you on this one: I tried Logan early on. I think I blew it when I mentioned that it was the name of a character from one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies (Logan’s Run), and my wife hates sci-fi. 😦

Judging from the charts in that fascinating web site, the popularity of ‘Logan’ will run out fast.

Vincent should have won an Oscar for his completely convincing portrayal of an alien cockroach wearing a human skin, in MIB.

Giant cockroaches (and weird dream villains — The Cell) notwithstanding, ‘Vincent’ (“the conqueror”) is a wonderful name. He, if that’s what your child is, has already conquered your time and energy just by sitting in the womb and facing south (our son, Dash, was 10 days late and took 12 hours of pushing; the kid had a large noggin). Just don’t call him ‘Vinny.’

I also like ‘Charlie’ so you can have a ‘Charlie’ and a ‘Parker.’ Not so much ‘Peter’ and ‘Parker.’ ‘Charlie’ could also be a girl’s nickname, right–for ‘Charlotte’?

I hear ‘Charlie’ as the name of a perfume sung by Mel Torme.

I think you’re missing an obvious choice. How about ‘Voyager’?

    Voyager and Parker, eh?

  10. Chris said, on August 22, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Heh. I’ll bet if I did that, Parker would turn out to be the ambitious one, and Voyager would be a 400 pound couch potato who never leaves town.

Sean, settled back in Wisconsin (I realize that this covers a lot of ground)?

Off to the hospital, folks. This *may* be it. Not sure. Update as soon as I can.
